Description

The Chelsea 281 Series Power Take-Off Assembly, part number 281GDFJP-D5XV or 281GDFJPD5XV, is a hydraulically shifted hot-shift PTO built for automatic transmissions with a 10-bolt aperture, including Allison transmissions. The 281 Series is an evolution of the 280 Series, featuring a ductile iron bearing cap rated 117% stronger than gray iron, an o-ring sealing configuration between the housing and bearing cap for improved clamp load, and clutch pack steel discs that are 80% thicker than the predecessor design. The series supports continuous operation and is used across fire and rescue, refuse, truck crane, and pumper cleaner applications. Call us to confirm proper fit for your transmission and application.

Additional Information

The Chelsea 281 Series is an evolution of the widely used 280 Series PTO. Key engineering changes address the vibrational loads introduced by modern and high-output engine designs. The ductile iron bearing cap replaces the gray iron unit and is 117% stronger. The revised o-ring sealing configuration between the housing and bearing cap improves clamp load retention. Steel discs in the clutch pack are 80% thicker, reducing premature tooth wear under continuous-duty cycles. Optional SmartStart reduces shock load at engagement; optional Electronic Overspeed Control (EOC) protects driven equipment from overspeed events. Wet spline lubrication, when specified, provides 7 to 10 times greater output shaft life compared to standard lubrication. Rotatable cast iron flanges allow pump clearance adjustment at installation. A positive stop for driveline outputs eliminates oil seal damage from coupling contact. Reference documents: 281/288 Series Parts List HY25-2281-M1/US and 267/281/288/871/878 Series Owner’s Manual.
